As the COO and co-founder of Stack, I was responsible for fundraising, which involved successfully raising a $3 million seed round. I also handled the financial side of things, acting as the de facto CFO or accountant. Throughout this process, we learned a lot, often through making numerous costly mistakes. In this article, I want to talk about the myths that we bought into and how this led to us wasting a lot of money, including one time where we “wasted” $50,000 in a single transaction - the biggest financial mistake of my startup career. These lessons were important for me, and I hope by sharing them, it might help other founders avoid making the same mistakes.
