As a co-founder of Stack, among other things, I was also in charge of hiring. I scaled the team from just four to nineteen employees. And in this process, I learned a lot. Initially, I undertook extensive research to understand how other successful companies scaled up. I grappled with the importance of building a strong company culture and ended up creating our own hiring framework. I even wrote an article on the importance and challenges of fostering a strong company culture in a remote setting.
We made a few significant mistakes along the way, such as rushing the hiring process, ending up with the wrong people, and not letting them go soon enough. Sam Altman, when talking about Zuckerberg, once said that he was an exceptional founder, not because he hired well, but because he fired best. I certainly learned that lesson the hard way..
And with this article, I would like to summarize my experience of hiring in startups, what I learned in this process, and what are the most important traits founders should look for when they hire employees.
